The following was sent to me by Jean Laws via e-mail 7 Jan 2001:
LaSalle Co Democrat Sep 9, 1851 Tues. On Monday the lst inst. an elopement took place in LaSalle, the parties being a Mr Ed J Swanson and Mrs Eliza Cox, wife of John Cox , resident of that town. It is stated they are on their way to Cal. Swanson has left behind a wife and four children unprovided for, and Mrs Cox has confided a young child, three years of age, to the care of her late husband: promising in the course of 12 months , she will again return to bless him with her presence. Rather cool that.
Ill State Journal Springfield Ill Sep 12, 1851: Let Them Go! Edward J Swanson and Eliza Cox, both married persons and having families, left their partners and children, in LaSalle Co, a few days ago for Cal. Mrs Cox left word for her husband that she would be back in twelve months.

Anna Salierno said he was in the U.S. - Mexican War and might have died in it. Her FGS has date of 1851. NV. NOTE: Mexican War was 1846-1848, so he wouldn't have died then.

Note that a letter from attorney representing Edward Jr.'s four children wrote to the estate of Mary Swanson and said that she died leaving a son Edward, "who has since died". That sounds as though he outlived his mother, which probably means he died in California, not on the trail out.
