Individual Details
David Pugh
(8 Feb 1769 - 24 Oct 1857)
Young David Pugh left Wales early in the year of 1801 and landed in Philadelphia. He took up residence in Baltimore, MD for about a year working and learning English. He met Dr. Samuel Jones who had purchased land warrants. He purchased 4000 acres of land (1/4 township) with 25 Rev War land warrants. The land was located in Federal Township 6 of range 20 in an area that was to become Radnor TWP, Delaware County Ohio.
Early in 1802 Dr. Jones employed Pugh to go to Ohio to locate and examine the 4000 acres.. After a 2 month journey on horseback David Pugh arrived near Franklinton, Ohio (now Columbus) hired a local scout to take him up river to the land location.
Thorough letters written by a resident of Carpenter Ohio it was learned that he made the settlement of Carpenter (now in Licking Co) his headquarters for 7 weeks in 1802.
David recognized the worth of the land as good for farming, went back to Philadelphia and offered to buy the 4000 acres. Dr. Jones was getting older, recognized David Pugh as a worthy citizen and accepted David's offer. A deed was recorded in Philadelphia and subsequently in Franklin County as Delaware County was not as yet formed.
David Pugh's deed for 4000 acres (excluding 495 acres) made in Philadelphia is recorded Feb 23 1803 in Ohio, (it was soon to be in, Delaware County that was formed in 1808) . Pugh paid $2650 for 3505 acres of the 4000 acres (Dr. Jones had sold and given away 495 acres!).
This was in the area of the settlement around now Radnor, Ohio. David Pugh made a trip back to Wales offering his land for sale and land in Section 1 Twp 5 where he had been made land agent on site by Jonas Stansbury owner of the land.
David Pugh lived in that area only a short time (married Jane Murphy about 1808) , by 1815, they had moved to Welsh-Hills, around what is now Renoldsburg Ohio and lived there the rest of their lives. They were interred at the Primitive Baptist Cemetery near Renoldsburg Ohio.
The pictures of David and wife Jane Murphy Pugh were passed down through the family to Virginia Gugel of Indiana who came to Radnor bringing the originals and allowed them to be digitally copied for display at the Museum.
Welshman, Henry Perry and wife Margaret, purchased the lst 100 acre plot of the 4000 acres. Henry and his wife and children may have built the first family cabin in the area (Now near the corner of Rt. 203 and Penry road). There is still a dug well there that is said to be the Perry Well. Likely a joke on the famous "Perrys Well" in England. When David and Jane Pugh left the area abt 1814 he appointed Henry Perry land agent on site a duty that Henry performed for many years.
