Abraham Witmer, Sr. bought 100 acres in Lampeter Township from his father on 15 April 1774. Next, on 23 September 1789, he bought an inn on the "Great Road" to Philadelphia where if forded the Conestoga River. The Pennsylvania Assembly granted him the right to build a bridge over the Conestoga River and to charge tolls for its use. The stone areched "Witmer's Bridge" was replaced in the 1930s.
