David Newcomer

David Newcomer was a surgeon. He graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1859, and began practice in Upton, Pennsylvania. David was appointed Assistant Surgeon with the 26th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry in 1862. He served with McClellan at Hickahominy Swamp and in the Wilderness, and in the Peninsular Campaign with the Army of the Potomac. In the later battle David became ill from exposure. He resigned his commission and returned home to recover. In 1864 he reentered the Surgical Corp, stationed in New Jersey.

Upon being discharged from the Army, he returned to Upton, Franklin, Pennsylvania. In 1865 he moved to Martinsburg, West Virginia. Then, in 1871 he moved to Mount Morris, Ogle, Illinois. David Newcomer was a member of the Lutheran Church and the Masonic Order, Knights of Pythias and John Smith's Post G.A.R. in Mount Morris, Illinois.
