Death
Irene H. SuchslandA memorial service for Irene Heiken Suchsland, a retired Portland, Ore. teacher, was held at 11 a.m. at the Milwaukie Lutheran Church, Milwaukie, Ore., on Saturday, March 17. Mrs. Suchsland, 71, died March 14 at her Milwaukie home. Pastor L. Roholt officiated at the service.
Born in Castle Grove Township, Mrs. Suchsland was a 1931 graduate of Monticello High School and attended the University of Northern Iowa and taught in Iowa schools until her marriage to Leonard Suchsland in 1944.
In 1962 the family moved into the Portland, Ore., area where she obtained her bachelor's degree from Lewis and Clark College, Portland. She taught in the Portland school system for 11 years, retiring six years ago. Mr. Suchsland passed away in 1980.
She was a member of the Milwaukie Lutheran Church and the Milwaukie Senior Center, where she was supervisor of the Senior Companion Program and started the "Friendly Visitor" program.
Mrs. Suchsland is survived by a daughter, Dianne Welsh, Honolulu, Hawaii, a son, Bryan, Redwood, Calif., a brother, Harvey, Fresno, Calif., two sisters, Caroline Heiken and Emma Heiken, both of Monticello, and two grandsons.
