WILL F. POPPEMONTICELLO - Funeral services for Will Frederick Poppe, 81, will be held at 11 a.m. today .(Thursday) at St. Matthew Lutheran church. The Rev. Harold L. Naig will officiate. Burial will be in Wayne Zion cemetery, rural Monticello.
Mr. Poppe died Monday afternoon, May 21, at John McDonald hospital after a few days illness. He had resided at Senior Home the past few years. He was born Feb. 13, 1892 near Monticello, son of Johann F. and Almuth K. Dirks Poppe. He received his early education in the Jones county schools.
He was married Dec. 12, 1917 to Mary Schafer. The couple farmed near Lang worthy. Mrs. Poppe died March 30, 1930.
Mr. Poppe was then married to Katharine E. Ortgies Oct. 28, 1931. They continued living on the farm until 1946 when they moved to Monticello. Mrs. Poppe died April 4, 1968.
Mr. Poppe was a member of St. Matthew church and Monticello Veterans of Foreign War Post having served in the U. S. Army during WWI
Surviving are four step-children, Carl and Herman Ortgies of Anamosa, Mrs. Gerke (Louise) Bohlken and Mrs. Learow (Meta) Tobiason of Monticello; 12 grand- children, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Casketbearers were Robert Tobiason, Emil Ortgies, Loren Dirks, David Ortgies, Dennis Ortgies and Leonard Wood.
