Henry Dewitt

(Abt 1758 - Abt 1811)

After the Revolutionary War, a vast expanse of land west of the Appalachians which was gained by Britain's victory in the French and Indian war but closed to settlement by the colonial government now became available to citizens brave enough to relocate there. Some of the land was given out in grants to Revolutionary War veterans in payment for their services, and more was available for purchase at low cost. These circumstances resulted in a massive movement of people to the western lands, particularly Kentucky, in the decades following the war. Kentucky was populated largely by settlers from Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania (Zwicker, and Stewart).
Henry Dewitt was one of these settlers, having received land grant No. 2826 for 100 acres of land in Kentucky on March 26, 1784 from the Commonwealth of Virginia for his military service. He had served 2 years in the Virginia Line. Henry selected land on the Southern waters of Rolling Forks Creek. Henry probably died between 1810 and 1811 because his name was

1826 - 1829 Tax list: Ann, Abraham and Soloman C, Soloman is listed as
1830 Tax: Ann DeWitt 45 Acres, Abraham, Soloman C. 50 acres. From this
1831-1832 too blurred to read; 1833 Tax: Abraham, Ann 45 acres, Soloman C. and Bennett M.. a James appears living in Elizabethtown, he is related to Bennett.
1834 Tax Roll on 2 rolls: Ann DeWit and Abraham on first roll and Bennett and James on second roll. Henry's son Soloman Coy had moved to Indiana near his Uncle Elisha and family.
1835 (none); 1836 - 1837 Tax: Ann, Abraham and Bennett, James and now their brother Caleb. None for 1838
1838 Hardin only has Bennett, James and Caleb. Larue Co KY had been formed
Henry's family remaining in Nelson Co KY were:
1828 Nelson Co KY: James DeWitt 568 acres on Rolling Creek, Price DeWitt
1829 Nel Co Tax: Price DeWitt and John DeWitt tax 1000 and also 100 acres.
1830 Tax: John DeWitt 650 acres and Price DeWitt 331 acres both on Harrison Fork.
1830 James DeWitt's wife Mary (Whitfill) DeWitt is listed 1830 in
