Paul and Issac DeWitt first purchased land in Belonte Co OH in 1810.

When the Co. Commissioners set apart a new township on 16 Sep 1810, these pioneers asked that it be named Wheeling. It was larger than it is today, as it then included the present Liberty and part of Knox township.

Paul and Charity DEWITT settled in Wheeling Township, Guernsey County, Ohio in 1810. They came from Wheeling, at that time Virginia. Then William and several other siblings and families moved to Holmes County.

At a Court of Common pleas held at Cambridge within and for said County on the third day of March Anno Domini One thousand eight hundred and Nineteen Personally came into Court George Mitchell and David Dewitt the subscribing witnesses to the aforesaid Last Will and testament of Paul Dewitt and severally made oath that they did see the said Paul Dewitt the Testator therein named subscribe and acknowledge the same to be his Last Will and Testament and at the time of his so doing he was to the best of their apprehension of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding

In the name of God Amen I Paul Dewitt of the County of Guernsey and State of Ohio Being Weak of Body but of sound and perfect mind and Memory Blessed by Almighty God for the same, do make and publish this my Last will and Testament. In manner and form following (that is to say) I will and divise that my beloved wife Charity has her living of the place without leaving the house she now lives in her life with all the household furniture. I further will and bequeath unto my Youngest son Henry Dewitt the North side of the Land it being on half of the quarter I now live on together with one half of my farming utentials of wat kind soever and one horse. I further will and bequeath unto my son David Dewitt the South half of said quarter together with one half of my farming utentials and the young black mare. I further will and bequeath to my Daughter Elisabeth On cow and one bed and bedding and one spinning wheel I further will and bequeath unto my son Paul Dewitt six young stears three two year olds and three yearlings together with one third of all that is raised on the place for the space of four years with his labouring constant on the farm the said fore years. I further will and desire that my hoggs what at this time is fit for killing together with one Beef and the present? Crop as well what is together as what is Gathered for the support of the family without any alterations. I further will and desire that my wife Carity has her choise of the cows to be at her disposal. And the residue of my personal estate I desire it should be put to sale in Nine months after my decease on a credit of Twelve Months and the Amount of said sale to be equally divided between Barnet Paul William Catharine Sarah Susan and Elizabeth my sons and Daughters and Lastly I desire and appoint my beloved wife Executrix and my son Barnet Dewitt Executor hereby revoking all former will by me made. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this third day of October In the Year of our Lord Eighteen hundred and Eighteen.
