I think the 30 May 1855 birthdate came from a mis-reading of the very poor handwriting on the death certificate. It appears to say May 30, 1855, but upon closer inspection it might say 1852. 1852 would agree with the 1870 census. The 1870 census clearly shows he was born about 1852.
