Individual Details
Mary Jane Chronister
(9 Jul 1848 - 24 Nov 1924)
According to Pauline Bonney's notes, a Dr. Walter Lee Myers told her that "She was a small dark skinned woman, said to be part Cherokee. She could have been adopted by Chronisters. She was very superstitious, and would sit by the fire and tell grandchildren scary stories." Another person ("a son of Ferman Myers") told her that "She could chew tobacco, smoke a pipe and roll a cigarette at the same time."
Breaking news: In re-reading an e-mail from a fellow researcher (Marie Thurman-Vann), I realized that she said James A. Myers married Mary Jane Thurman, the aunt of Edward F. Thurman (who married Lucy Myers). If Mary Jane Chronister was born a Thurman and later adopted by the Chronisters, that would make Ed and Lucy first cousins. More importantly, that would give a whole different direction to researching Mary Jane's pedigree. Interestingly, Marie confirmed that Mary Jane Thurman matches the physical description that I had of Mary Jane Chronister. However, the birthdate of the two is off by two years, and the Chronister family researchers that I've contacted knew nothing of her being adopted.
