John Allen helped on the family farm according to the 1880 Federal censusfor Reynolds County, Missouri. He was age 13 and he may have not beenattending school by this time. His father, James N. has the occupationlisted as a "dry goods merchant" and John Allen may have helped in thefamily's general merchandise store in Centerville, Missouri, as wellduring the 1880's.

In 1886 John Allen married Mary Elizabeth Buford. He was about 20 yearsof age, she about 22 years old. This marriage connected our Bowlesfamily with the Buford and Shy families.
