(1868 - 1870)
Notes imported from GEDCOM:
Martha Bowles was the youngest child and only daughter of James N. andRuth Crownover Bowles. The story of the tragic death of Martha Bowles atage two, is from family tradition related to me by Jewell Harrison Bowlesof Centerville, Missouri in 1998 and a report written by Jacqueline L.Parks, who has done extensive research on many Reynolds County families.Ms. Parks was kind enough to make a copy of this story, as related to herby two, Bowles family members, Ruth Bowles Mann and Glen Bowles. Theyare the children of James Albert Bowles and grandchildren of James N.Bowles.
The story is as follows: "On election day when Martha was two years old,James and Ruth had been to town taking part in the election - Martha wentto sleep and Ruth laid her on the bed and went out to milk the cows -someway, little Martha either fell or was placed in the roaring fire ofthe fireplace and burned to death. The family felt that a small boy thatJames had found in a snow storm and brought home to raise, may have beenresponsible for her death. The boys parents had frozen to death in awagon coming through Reynolds Co. They had no identification."
