Dr. William Crownover Bowles

(16 Nov 1863 - 20 Sep 1895)

W.C. Bowles published one of the first newspapers in Reynolds County, Missouri from 1892 til his death. The paper was called THE REFORMER. According to the notes of Brenda Vanderpool Brockman (a descendant of James N. Bowles) the paper continued to be published by James N. Bowles and other family members until it was sold in 1911 to A.P. Shriver and renamed to "the Outlook". However, according to an old newspaper article on the History of Reynolds County, the "Reynolds County Outlook" pre-dated the THE REFORMER by about 5 years. The same article refers to him as "Dr.", but I don't know what kind of degree he had, if any.

WC was Justice of the Peace at the time of his death, according to his obituary.

Notes imported from GEDCOM:

William Crownover Bowles was the first son of James N. Bowles and was no doubt named after his grandfather, William Bowles and his mother's surname, Crownover. He was born in Iron County, Missouri which is adjacent to Reynolds County. Afer William was born in 1863, he was taken with the family to Illinois but they were back in Mo. by the time the second child, his brother John Allen was born in 1866. Exactly where or why they went is not known. This would have been during the Civil War but whether there is any connection to that, is also unknown at this time.

According to the obituary of William Crownover Bowles, he died of "congestive fever" and a "fatty heart" at age 31 years, 10 months and 4 days. It states he was the second child born to James N. and Ruth Crownover Bowles. He had been a public school teacher in the fall and winters and farmed in spring and summer. In June 1899 he launched with T. O. Bell and W. J. Hunter, the "Reformer", a weekly newspaper. In 1885 he joined the Centerville Missionary Baptist Church (later changed to the name Centerville Baptist Church) where he was an active member. At the time of his death, he was serving as Justice of the Peace in Reynolds County.
