James Albert Bowles, called Albert, was the third child and son of JamesN. and Ruth Jane Crownover Bowles. His mother died when he was aboutfour years old. His father remarried about one year later and ElizabethJane Parks became his step-mother. As a child, James Albert, no doubtcontributed to the farm work as his father is listed as "farmer" in the1870 census. At least by the 1880's, his father also was operating ageneral merchandise store in the town of Centerville, Missouri and JamesAlbert may have worked in the store, also.

James Albert had left the household of his father, James N., before the1900 Federal census. This was probably when he married, at age 24, in1894. On the 1900 Federal census for Reynolds County, Missouri he wasage 30 and had been married for 6 years. His wife was listed as Lucy J.and, age 23. Son, William A. was age 4. James A. listed his occupationas, printer. He is renting a farm and no doubt also doing some farming.

With the death of his brother, William C. in 1895, father James N.Bowles became the publisher of the newspaper, the Reformer, which hadbeen founded by William Crownover Bowles. James Albert must have beenworking on the paper in 1900.

James Albert Bowles was involved in politics the early 1900's as isevidenced by an article in the January 18, 1906 paper stating "J.A.Bowles was over from Corridon yesterday shaking hands. Albeert has beenspoken of as a candidate for presiding judge of the County Court."

James Albert Bowles was proprietor of the family, Bowles Hotel by 1920.The 1920 Federal census for Reynolds County Missouri listed James Albertas J. A. age 50, renting and occupation a "hotel keeper". They were inCarroll Township, Centerville Missouri, dwelling #49. Lucy Jane Callahanis age 43, and children are Lee age 16; J.A.jr. age 14; H. Glen age 10;J.B. age 9; and Ruth age 7. Also in the household was an S.P. Carty,boarder, age 60 whose occupation was carpenter/laborer.
