Catherine Butler Long obituary, Cresco Plain Dealer, Cresco, Howard County, Iowa, Feb 6, 1914, Page 1, Column 4:
Long
Mrs. Catherine Long, nee Butler, died at her home in Howard Center on Saturday, Jan, 17, 1914, after an illness of ten months, which she bore patiently, always being cheerful and bestowing kind words to those around her.
She was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, Aug. 4, 1835, coming to this country with her parents, sisters and brothers, when young and settled in Boston, Mass., where she was united in marriage to Lawrence Long, Sept. 22nd, 1854, by the Rev. Father Flood of that place. To this union was born twelve children, five daughters and seven sons, of which four died in infancy and one a daughter, Mrs. J. P. Dinneen, of Chicago, died on Jan. 16, 1913.
Seven children are left to mourn the loss of a kind and loving mother, all of whom were present at her funeral, namely, Lawrence Long of Garden City, S.D., Frank Long, of Little Falls, Minn., John, James, and Miss Mary Long, of Howard Center; Mrs. Catherine Flock and Miss Ella Long, of Chicago, Ill. Mrs. Long has twenty-five grandchildren and one great grandson, also a sister Mrs. Nora Mockler, of Ft. Dodge, Ia., and many nieces and nephews.
James Mockler, of Kingley, Ia., M.E. Mockler, of Stanwood, Ia., and John Hickey and sister Margarite, of Vall, Ia, and a son-in-law, J. P. Dinneen, of Chicago were present at the funeral.
Mrs. Long had been a resident of Howard Center for 58 years and was well liked by all who knew her.
She has always been a good Catholic and a firm believer of all the teachings of her church.
Her body was laid to rest on Wednesday, Jan 21st, in St. Joseph's cemetery. May her soul rest in peace.
The funeral services were conducted by the very Rev. Father T. R. Murtagh, of the Church of the Assumption.
