"In the 1924 Miss America contest Florida was represented by Margaret Swindell, Miss Lakeland; Lottie Eitzen, Miss Pensacola; Virginia McRae, Miss Tampa; and Frances Payne, Miss West Palm Beach.
Miss America 1924, the fourth Miss America pageant, was held at the Million Dollar Pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey on September 6, 1924.[1][2] Mary Katherine Campbell, who won the title the previous two years, placed as 1st runner-up. Pageant officials later instituted a rule allowing competitors to be crowned only once.[3] Ruth Malcomson competing as Miss Philadelphia was named Miss America of 1924 against a field of 83 entrants, the largest number of contestants in Miss America history.[4]
Second runner-up Fay Lanphier would become Miss America 1925. Another of the finalists, Beatrice Roberts, became an actress who appeared in more than 50 Hollywood productions.
Several years later Ruth married Carl Schaubel, and enjoyed a quiet life in her native Philadelphia. "The simple life for me," she once said.
Ruth's niece became Miss Pennsylvania 1956, and her grandniece became Miss Delaware 1981. Ruth remained a firm supporter of the pageant until her passing in 1988. Ruth Malcomson (April 16, 1906 – May 25, 1988) was Miss America in 1924, earning the title at age 18.[1]
Malcomson, a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was the amateur winner in the 1923 contest and returned to defeat incumbentMary Campbell, who was seeking her third consecutive crown.[2] At the time, being only a couple of years old, the beauty contest was sometimes still referred to as "The Atlantic City Pageant," with the winner called "The Golden Mermaid."
There were no talent contests at that time. "Votes were given entirely to physical appearance, personality and poise," she explained during an interview in 1962

Found mention of Meredith Hemphill in 1922 in Spring Lake Park article about a play with Lewis and Samuel Kerr and everyone else in town. I think the Kerrs, Morrisons, Hemphills all had summer residences in Spring Lake Park and so knew each other for several years growing up.

Miss Frances Evelyn Payne of 12 E. 69th st Manhattan, daughter of Mr and Mrs Ralph Payne of Rushville, Ind., will be married to Lewis Sayre Kerr Jr., son of Mr and Mrs Louis S Kerr of 1 W. 72nd st., Manhattan, on Wednesday of next week.
Miss Payne received her education at Hollons College, Virginia. Mr Kerr attended the Pomfret School and was a member of the Class of 1922 at Williams College, Mrs. Kerr, who is the former Miss Louise Vanderbilt Kissam, is the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Samuel K Kissam, who resided in Brooklyn.
The ceremony will be performed at the home of Mr and Mrs Clifford Hemphill, 12 E 69th st by the Rev, Dr, Roelif H Brooks, rector of St Thomas Church, in the presence of a few relatives and intimate friends.
Miss Virginia Payne will be her sister's only attendant. Samuel Kerr will act as best man for his brother and Mr Hemphill and Eugene Hoffman will be ushers. A small reception will follow.
Mr Kerr and his bride will live in Manhattan.

Frances was previously married to Lewis S. Kerr, Jr in 1929 and divorced in 1936. John was married to Jean McDowell in 1933 and divorced by June of 1938. Grannie said they were waiting for his divorce to go through to get married.
