Even though Wise County and Letcher County do not exist at the date of
Thomas and Edward's births, they are formed by the date of their
marriages. This is very interesting that they are being so specific
about where they were born. And then, Wise is right across the line
from Letcher where the Pollys are living. So since Elijah's last
record was on the 1830 Perry Co Ky census, he has moved over the line
by 1832 and back again by 1837. Elijah seems to have gone over the
line into Perry Co, KY only very temporarily and he has no family ties
to this area..

=======================================
John Elijah Baker death by hanging story

As I was growing up my Grandfather Charlie L Baker Use to point to a piece of land in the Curve of a Road and tell me " My great grandfather was hung right there during the Civil War." When I started working on the family Tree I got in touch with Chloa Baker Deskins. I asked her about the hanging story and she asked if I ever heard the rest of the story. This is the family story as told to me by Chloa: Eligah was a very giving man. He helped any one that needed it. On a day in 1862 a group of seven Confederate renegades showed up at his door. They were tired and hungry. Elijah took them into his home and feed them. When they had their bellies full they asked for more supplies to take back to the other soldiers. Elijah took them to the barn to gather what he could spare. The soldiers followed him there. When Elijah did not come back to the house his sons went to look for him. They found him Hung from the rafters of the barn by his own suspenders. The soldiers had robbed him and hung him. The sons went out after the soldiers. And family rumor is they killed and buried them in the mountains. All the sons ended up fighting for Union during the war in retaliation for their fathers murder at the hands of the confederates. Chloa said her father, preacher Andrew Baker, use to say "and that's seven confederate soldiers that will never be found"

I have the digital copy of this page. The marriage record is funny in that they didn't put down the names of both the groom and bride. It just says Eligah Baker, not the brides name.
