Mark Chilton was a member of Capt. Lewis Ellzey's militia company, enrolling in October 1755. The company marched to Winchester and then Hampshire County in October 1755.He was one of 20 men in the company who refused to reenlist after their 30 day draft expired, although he did not receive his pay until March 1756.

Mark Shelton made his will in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, on 5-25-1801, and the will was proven on 6-21-1802.His will lists his wife Rachel and his nine children: John Shelton, Nancy Davidson, George Shelton, Rachel Davidson, Frankey Write, William Shelton, Charles Shelton, Henry Shelton, and Spencer Shelton.
His wife Rachel was given sole possession of his estate for her lifetime. At her death his land and plantation was to be divided equally by his two youngest sons, Henry and Spencer.
His personal possessions were divided equally between his nine children.
His sons John and George were named executors.
The will was witnessed by Cuthburt and Lucy Goodwin Hudson .
