Miscellaneous
John Chilton (d. 1744) and his unknown wife have been shown to be the common ancestor couple of Sherry L. Lawrence and Karol Harwig Richardson by autosomal DNA tests taken by these individuals: Larry D. Lawrence, Karol Hartwig Richardson, Larry K. Shelton, Loyd Lee, Sue Ferbrache, and Christian David Haugen.DNA tests for Larry D. Lawrence are incomplete, but his relationship to John Chilton (d. 1744) and his unknown wife can be inferred through the results for Sherry L. Lawrence.
Autosomal DNA segment matches from tests taken by these individuals at Family Tree DNA, other DNA testing companies, or whose test results were transferred to My Heritage DNA showed matching or overlapping DNA segments in common with Sherry L. Lawrence and Larry D. Lawrence that fall into three groups of matching segments.
Additionally, genealogical information is consistent with that of Sherry L. Lawrence, Larry D. Lawrence, and Karol Hartwig Richardson.
Group 1
Name Initials DNA Segment Range Centimorgans Chromosome

Note: Group 1
These matches do not satisfy the requirements for Triangulated DNA Segment matches that is an indication of probable confirmation of a common ancestor couple by autosomal DNA testing. This group was not tested for matching DNA segments to each other, except for SLL and LDL.
The validity of John Chilton and his unknown wife being the common ancestor couple for SLL and KHR in this this group is supported by Matches in Common and overlapping DNA segments, and this combination of DNA test results is considered by many genealogical DNA researchers to be close to 100% as accurate as DNA Segment Triangulation.
Note: Results are not available for all individuals from all testing sites.
Group 2

These matches also conform to the DNA standards of the Board for Certification of Genealogists in that all individuals have genealogically established direct lines of descendancy from John Chilton and his unknown wife through two of their children and four grandchildren. The matches do not have any common ancestor except John Chilton and his unknown wife.
Y-DNA test analysis for Shelton descendants at a Family Tree DNA partner project are available at Tina Hall's website: tinasgenealogy.ushalls.com/dna.html
This project has determined three distinct and apparently unrelated Shelton families using variations of surnames Shelton, Chilton, Chelton, Skelton, Sheldon, or other similar names in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.
The Lucy Shelton-Sanford G. Slayton-Lucy Slayton and Edwin L. Lawrence family's Shelton ancestors originated from John Chilton (d. 1744.)
Y-DNA tests at the Shelton DNA Project show the following testers with Y-DNA results consistent with descendants of Mark Chilton/Shelton son of John Chilton (d. 1744):
SH 49, SH 100 (cousin of Karol Hartwig Richardson an Autosomal DNA match to Sherry L. and Larry D. Lawrence), SH 111, and SH 113.
These testers are from various branches of known descendants of Mark Chilton/Shelton.
By virtue of Autosomal DNA matches with Karol Hartwig Richardson and several other descendants of her branch of the Mark Chilton/Shelton family descent from John Chilton (d. 1744) is established for Sherry L. and Larry D. Lawrence.
Y-DNA testers matching descendants of Thomas Shelton (d. 1808) son of John Chilton (d. 1744) are:
SH 86: Tester is a descendant of Bennett Shelton, who is son of Thomas Shelton (d, 1808) and his wife Jane. The genealogy for this tester has not been clearly established.
SH 133: Ted Shelton-descendant of Bennett Shelton (son of William Shelton, who was the grandson of Thomas (d. 1808) and his wife Jane.
Sh 166: Michael Shelton- descendant of Thomas Shelton (son of Bennett Shelton, who was son of Thomas Shelton (d. 1808) and his wife Jane Shelton.
The Y-DNA confirmed descent of Sherry L. and Larry D. Lawrence from Thomas Shelton (d. 1808) is inferred by established genealogical research.
The identity of John Chilton and his unknown wife as the ancestor couple of Sherry L. Lawrence and Karol H. Richardson conforms to the DNA standards of the Board for Certification of Genealogists, in that all individuals have genealogically established direct lines of descendancy from John Chilton and his unknown wife and have matching DNA segments. The matches do not have any genealogically common ancestor except John Chilton and his unknown wife.
