Birth
From Gary D. Hill's tribute to his father, Up on the Green Mountain:Donald H. Hill was born on his parents' 160 acre homestead, one mile from present-day Gran Quivera National Monument, in a dugout home, near Mountainair, NM.

Donald H. Hill entered the US Army Air Force in 1938, and he served as an Air Crew Chief, Mechanics Division, B-24 Bomber Squadron in the 7th Bomb Group, 10th Air Force, at Tez Pur, India, during WW II.He continued his service through the Korean War as an Air Crew Chief on B-29's and was stationed in Guam, from 1950-1952.
His military service provided mechanical, electrical, and technical training which prepared him for his career after leaving the Army Air Force.

Donald H. Hill was Valedictorian of his class at McAllen High School, but de declined to give a graduation speech because he couldn't afford to buy a suit.Miscellaneous
Donald H. Hill always showed an interest in electronics, engineering, and aviation.He was very accomplished all these fields, despite not having a formal education in these fields.
His other interests included reading a wide variety of literature.
He was a boxer during his Army Air Force Corp. service, and passed on this skill to his sons.

After his military service, Donald H. Hill worked as a missile mechanic in Civil Service and for Martin Marietta Corp. He was employed by them during astronaut training and the launch and completion of the Skylab Mission at the Johnson Space Center in Houston in the early 1970s.He worked on NASA's Skylab Project in Houston, where he was instrumental in the early US space program and involved in solving many of the technical and mechanical problems faced by this pioneering project.
He was one of the chief logistical engineers assigned to Skylab. His primary duties included acquiring the equipment utilized for astronaut training pertaining to the mission. This included training the astronauts for physics and medical experiments to be performed onboard the Skylab.
