Bertha Hall and her sister Iva stayed with Mary Virginia "Aunt Jenny" Coleman and her husband George W. Coleman after their mother Lenora Hicks Hall died. They stayed with the Colemans in their Oglesby, Texas, home for about four years, and returned again later for a short time.Aunt Jenny was Bertha's mother Lenora's half sister, both being the daughters of Green Hicks.

Bertha and John Lovic Hill moved from Texas to New Mexico in a covered wagon, taking their livestock and most of John's children by his first wife Maud Smith Hill with them.They settled on a 160 acre farm about one mile from present-day Gran Quivera National Monument, where they intended to raise pinto beans. A severe drought kept them from success on the farm, and in 1921 they sold the property.

Bertha Hall taught school in Rule, Texas, before her marriage.Bertha Hall Hill was a devout Southern Baptist, who read her Bible every day, and instilled in her children a magnificent sense of life and a loving God, despite all of the tragedies which had beset herself and her own family, in her childhood. She continued to teach all, to encourage discovery in daily life, in literature, in science, and all of the subjects, which she had taught in her early years as a teacher.
She was a very kind and loving person, and a loving grandmother, never condemning, always helpful, and always willing to show the way.
