Joseph L. Bailey became Ponta's first merchant when he opened a general merchandise store there in 1902.He also was a land owner and raised cotton and cattle, and was a director of the Guaranty State Bank in Ponta.
He remained in business until his death in 1930, with his son James Andrew Bailey as his partner during the last few years.
