Birth
He was born in October of 1843 per Knowla Morrow's Duncan Family History.His Find A Grave Memorial has a tombstone photograph showing his birth date as 10-14-1845.
The memorial shows he was born in Alabama.
Cherokee County History shows he was born in Butler County, Alabama.
Miscellaneous
He served in the Confederate Army, Co. C, 17th AL Infantry Regiment, during the Civil War. He was a prisoner of war in a Union prison camp. At the end of the war he had to walk home and it took him so long to get back home the family had almost given him up for dead.Other information from Cherokee County History:
He was mustered into the Confederate Army on 9-7-1862.
He was the lone person to escape death when a shell exploded in a group of soldiers. His only injury was the loss of a part of his left little finger.
When he was doing spy work, he was captured by Union troops on 12-15-1864. He was kept at the Military Prison in Louisville, Kentucky from 12-15 to 12-20, 1864; and then transferred to Camp Douglas, Illinois. On 4-14-1865, the day that Abraham Lincoln was shot, he mustered into the 5th U.S. Volunteer Infantry.

After first settling near Lone Star in Cherokee County, Texas, John Thomas Bailey moved his family to Dialsville in Cherokee County in 1890. He bought farm land there and in 1897 he opened a post office, store, and hotel. He became the Dialsville Railway Express agent and the Cotton Belt Railroad station agent. His many businesses were responsible for the rejuvenation of Dialsville.His wife Celia ran the hotel and earned a reputation as a hospitable hostess, serving home cooked meals prepared mostly from the Bailey farm, including fruit, vegetables, sausage, hogshead cheese, chitterlings, home-cured ham and bacon, and cane syrup. She canned and preserved vegetables, peaches, apples, berries, and plums to provide a year round supply. The only food items not produced at home were salt, spices, coffee, and flour.
The John Thomas and Celia Bailey hotel was a two story building with a round wrap-around porch on both stories at the front. Their boarders included many drummers, and they all gathered around the fireplace in the large living room to smoke cigars and enjoy conversations.
