According to a brief history written by Oscar Duncan, son of James Buchanan Duncan and grandson of Julius B. Duncan, and included in Peggy Duncan's research, "Benate" rode a red mule named Tobe to the Civil War and back. His service records are not very well documented. His widow Mary E. Duncan applied twice for a Confederate Widow's pension but the application does not appear to have been accepted.
The Civil War Service database at the Alabama Department of Archives & History has a record for Ben Duncan, Co. K, 53 rd Regiment, Cavalry, rank of private, reported by authority of D.E. Huffman, Ft. Deposit, AL on 9-6-1909.
In Mary E. Duncan's application on12-4-1920 she states he was a private in Co. C, 53rd Regt. under Capt. Lipscomb and discharged in May, 1865. Her application of 4-14-1915 states he was a private in Co. C, 24th Bat. AL Cavalry.
An affidavit on 4-2-1914 from W.J. Boen stated " he was acquainted with Jules B. Duncan, we fought many a battle.....Jules B. Duncan, John Been, Elisha Herlong, John Duncan, and myself messed together....I cooked, Jules B. Duncan carried wood.
Other information from Mary E. Duncan's applications include a report that the name Jules B. Duncan was not found on the rolls of Co. C of the 53rd AL Partisan Rangers C.S.A. but the 24th Bat. Colo. Cavalry was consolidared with the 53rd AL and that a letter of 4-13-1914 from D.E. Huffman states he was personally acquainted with Mr. Bennett Duncan. Note that the service record for Ben Duncan was authorized by D. E. Huffman. The confusion concerning Julius B. Duncan's Civil War service is probally due to the use of so many variations of his name as also seen on many official records throughout his life.
