THE SILVERSMITHS OF KENTUCKY, 1875-1850 by Nobel W. & Lucy F. Hiatt, The Standard Printing Co, Louisville, KY 1954:
William P. Poindexter was a jeweler in Lexington from about 1820 to 1859. At an early age he was apprenticed to a jeweler and upon completion of his appreticeship opened his own store. He formed a partnership with his son William under the name of W. Poindexter & Son, as found in the 1838 Lexington city directory.

I received for Christmas six silver coin spoons that came from a KY Estate Sale which I believe were made by this man. Does any one else have information on this Poindexter.
William P. Poindexter, was born in 1792, when
quite young began to learn the trade of a jeweler in Lexington, and having
finished his apprenticeship, continued the trade for many years, and was
so successful therein that he was enabled to retire about 1859 to the
rural delights of a farm. He was, at one time, in the City Council,
and died in the year 1869.
His wife, Sarah Higbee, bore him twelve children, of whom seven are
living: William A.' Joseph; Mary, wife of G. A. Bowyer; Julia, married
to D. H. Coulter; Ellie, wife of Dr. W. Baker; Sallie, Mrs. H. Payne, and
Laura widow of E. H. Parrish; William A., born in Fayette County in the
year 1818, has during his life, been an active and prosperous business man.
