Abstracts of Circuit Court Record Books, Greene County Archives Bulletin:
Thur Morning, 5 Dec 1850 "The Grand Jury came into Court & returned the following indictments to wit: State of MO vs Joseph D. Hayden indicted for Selling Liquor without License."
Jun Term 1851 "Now at this day came the Defendant in this cause by his attorney & makes his appearance in obedience to his recognizance.....motion heretofore filed to quash sad Indictment....considered by the Court that the said Motion be sustained."
from the "Springfield Mirror" : "Having bought the mill and distillery 5 miles east of Springfield, of R. P. Haden...I will keep constantly on hand whisky by the barrel at the store of McGinty & Haden in Springfield. J. D. Haden (co-owner of the Springfield store.)"

Supreme Court of Missouri. January Term 1852. The State v. Haden.
Cited Case: An indictment charging the sale of one quart of whisky and suffering the same to be drunk at the place of sale, without a grocer's dramshop keeper's or innkeeper's license is bad. The [wording of the] negation of license is not broad enough.
The defendant, Joseph D. Haden, was indicted for selling a quart of whisky and suffering it to be drank at the place of sale without license. He appeared and moved the court quash it which they did. The State excepted and brings this appeal. The Supreme Court agreed that the original indictment was bad - the defendant might have had a tavern license which would have permitted him to sell and permit the whisky to be drunk on the premises since the state provides for such a license. This indictment was properly quashed and the judgement affirmed.

Whiskey - By the Barrel
Having bought the Mill and Distillery, 5 miles East of Springfield of Mr. R. P. Haden [his brother], I am now prepared to fill all orders with the best quality of whiskey, by the barrel, at the low rate of 40 cents per gallon. Having repaired the Mill, I am prepared to grind for the people, wheat and corn, at short notice.
I will keep constantly on hand, whisky by the barrel, at the store of McGinty & Haden, Springfield MO. [Mar 6, 1856] J. D. HADEN

Now at this day comes Peter S. King who is known to the Court as the Sheriff of Greene County and the identical person whose name is subscribed to an instrument of writing purporting to be a Sheriff's Deed to Joseph D. Haden for the following described land, viz pt of NE 1/4 NE 1/4 Sec 12 Twp 29 Range 20 which was sold by order of the Greene Circuit Court for the purpose of partition as the real estate of John H Smith deceased and the said Peter C. King acknowledges that he executed the same as his act and deed for the uses and purposes therein contained.

Now at this day comes the Plaintiffs by their attorney and the said Defendants being three times solemnly called come not and being duly served with Process and the Plaintiff's petition being neither plead to answered nor demurred to and being founded on an instrument of writing signed by Defendants and the amount ascertained thereby, the Court doth find by examination of the same that the Defendants are indebted to said Plaintiff in the sum of $833.08. It is therefore considered by the Court that the Plaintiffs have and recover of and from the Defendants the said sum of $833.08 for their debt and damages and also costs of suit and that he have execution therefor.

SPRINGFIELD MIRROR; 18 Dec 1858:
Silver Shade Mill
This fine Mill is now in operation, and ready for the accommodation of the public. The machinery of the mill is all new and in excellent fix. The mill is situated 15 miles from Springfield and 4 mile above Linden, on the waters of Peedlo. Those having grinding to do would do well to give this mill a trial as I am satisfied they cannot do better elsewhere. Aug 21, 1858 J. D. HADEN
