JOHN REDFORD

(Abt 1665 - Bet 5 Mar 1752 and Oct 1752)

Although some references give John's birthdate as 1674, he was an adult in 1694 when his father died so is likely a few years older.

CAVALIERS, Vol. III
p.56. VA Patent Bk 9, p. 432 25 Apr 1702 Capt Wm Soames, 51A Henrico, Verina Parish. Name of Chinkapin Island N side Roundabout Br, adj John Bowling, John Radford.

In 1704 John was listed with 775 acres of land in Henrico Co. This is the amount his father patented in 1687. There is a conflicting patent for 254 acres of this land as evidenced by PB 9, p.287, dated 7 Nov 1700 when John Davis patented 254 acres adj Francis Radford, the Roundabout Slash, granted Redford on 5 Aug 1699, and on 1 Jul 1672 joined in a patent for 629 acres and by him deserted. The 1687 patent does state that the 1672 patent interfered with adjacent lands and had been rectified.

From 1713 to 1719, he served as Justice of the Peace for Henrico - perhaps longer as he was still mentioned as a Justice in 1725. He was Sheriif from 1728-1737. He also served as a Vestryman of the Curles Episcopal Church, even after it was removed to Richmond. On at least one occasion, he was referred to as a Captain (likely the militia). The Vestry book cites that on 31 Oct 1730, Capt John Redford paid 4000#'s of tobacco for the railing in the church and for six benches.

quote from the will "pay unto my Daughter Mary Weathers Immediately after she shall become a widow in the sum of fifty pounds current money; and if should so happen that she should dye before her husband William Weathers..."

Ann, wife of William Pledge, is not mentioned in the will of John Redford. Only one daughter, Mary Weathers, was named and she simply received a gift of money. Perhaps any other daughters had already received bequests in his lifetime. Ann could have been deceased but she had several children. I have found no proof of relationship although the naming patterns subsequently found in the Poindexter family would certainly indicate a close relationship to the Redford and Milner families.

[I know of no connection to the following other than the similar surname. Online WorldConnect databases state that the following Elizabeth Maxey, daughter of Edward Maxey & Susannah Gates was married to a John Radford, son of George Radford and Anne Massey. Agnes who married Joseph Bondurant was a daughter of this John & Elizabeth Maxey Radford.]
The Will of Susannah Maxey found in Goochland Deed Book 4, p.212, mentions her daughter Elizabeth Radford. Will is dated 31 May 1743.
Also Redford & Maxey had adjoing property lines.
