Individual Details

George Sossaman Haden

(1813 - )

The ancestors of Eleanor Thompson Haydon of Birmingham are given as the following George And Rachel. She placed them in the family of Robert G. and Mary Fisher Haden. I believe this was an error

1840 Census George was living in Jefferson Co AL.

1850 - Jefferson Co: Geo. S. with Rachel and the 4 children listed here.

1860 Census revealed the family had moved to Blount Co AL. There are some very puzzling things about this particular George Haden. He was born in GA where no other members of Robert G. Haden's family ever lived. This was the first hint that he had been placed in the wrong family.
Hh 544: George Haden, age 47, b. GA. Rachel, age 40, b. AL. Children born in Alabama: Jesse M. age 21, John W. age 18, Robert O. age 15.

1870 Blount Co. AL This census makes little sense.
Hh 349 [on the same page with daughter Margaret Hanes]
G. S. Haden, male, age 53, b. GA
S. J. Haden, female, age 26, b. GA
and then on the next page:
R. M. Haden, age 53, female, keeping house - she has been given a new Household number, 350 - but obviously this is Rachel.

1880. Blount Co AL. George S. Haden, age 66, b. GA as are BOTH HIS PARENTS. Rachel, age 64, wife, b. SC as were both her parents.

1850 Census. Jefferson Co AL; Baird Beat, District 32, p.207b and 208; Hh 8
Geo. S. Hayden, age 37, Farmer, b. GA. Rachel M., age 36, b. AL. Children all born in Alabama: Jesse M. age 11, Margaret A. 10, John W. 8, and Robert G. age 5.
In the same district in 1850, living with Matthew & Temperance Patton was a Richard M. Hayden, age 87, born in Kentucky. He also does not fit into the Haden family of my research.

[Estimate of marriage date based on age of oldest child.]

There is also a George G/C. Haden living in DeSoto Parish LA in 1850. Mary L. Fisher Haden, widow, is there; also her sons Robert, Alexander and Joseph. The George in LA, age 35, has a female, whose name is partially obscured, A___tha A. age 21 and Ann C. age 1 born in LA. Both George and lady born in Alabama which would be correct for George Haden son of Robert G. Haden, rather than Georgia. As far as I know Robert Gillespie Haden and family lived in North Carolina, Alabama [Macon Co], Mississippi and then Louisiana; they were never in Georgia. Also the George Haden in DeSoto is a slave-owner as are the other members of the family and he had in his household one Thos. Marr, age 25, as Overseer - the other Haden households also employed overseers. This George was creating records in Louisiana as early as 1844 and was still there in 1860.

I believe that the George "Sossaman" Haden whose descendants are found in Alabama is from an entirely different family and possibly should never have been linked with the North Carolina Hadens, sons of Anthony of Goochland.

Subject: Military Bounty Land certificate & transfer signatures

HADEN/HAYDEN, GLENN, ADKINS, EASTIS, BAGLEY, SLADE, BURTON.
I have just received a copy of the case file for a military bounty land
transaction which is a little different from others which I have. This one
involves an assignee, who purchased the warrant and located on land in
Jefferson Co., AL.
The original recipient was George S Haden, Priv in Capt D. Leaprerur's
Company, GA Volunteers, Florida War. The certificate for 40 acres was
issued to him on 11 Oct 1851. [Note: George is listed as George S Hayden
[ with wife & 4 children] on the 1850 Jefferson Co., AL census.]
On 10 Aug 1852, George sold the warrant to an assignee. His signature is on
the transfer.
The assignee was David Glenn [my GGG-Grandfather]. David used the 40 acres
warrant to purchase the NW1/4 of the SE1/4 of Section 14, Township 15 of
Range 2 West on 12 Aug 1852. There are two of David's signatures in the
file. [Date on what appears to be a cover folder is 15 April 1853, with
reg. May 26, 1853.]
Other names in the case file:
Witnesses on transfer: Thomas M Adkins, Justice of the Peace [signed as T M
Adkins], and Daniel Eastis. Joab Bagley, Judge of Probate [signed as J
Bagley].
Signatures on form for locating the 40 acres: M. D. J. Slade, Receiver; E M
Burton(?), Register.
