She was christened "Elizabeth Johnson Cocke" but her last name was changed to Pope along with her father's to comply with a will. She was named Elizabeth Johnson for her grandmother, the second wife of Governor John Pope, but was always called Mary Elizabeth and enrolled in school by that name.

She is buried Hawesville Cemetery, Hancock County, KY
