Said to be one of the founders of the Carolina Telephone Co in 1890's. In 1907, he helped found Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Co. Was President of Virginia-Carolina Chemical Company in the 1920's. Retired in Tarboro, NC
"When the Past Refused to Die: A History of Caswell Co NC 1777-1977" by William S. Powell, 1977; states on p.254: "George Holderness (1867-1947) born near Milton, moved to Tarboro where he established the Carolina Telephone & Telegraph Co which now serves a large part of Eastern North Carolina.

Geo. A. Holderness applied for a passport on 7 Jan 1920. He stated that he was born Caswell Co, NC on 15 Jun 1867 and his father. W. H. Holderness, born in NC was deceased. He never resided outside the U.S. and his permanent residence was at Tarboro, NC where he followed the occupation of Life Insurance. He planned to return to the U.S. in one month. He was visiting Cuba, sailing from Tampa, FL on the P.O. SS Line, 8 Jan 1920. He applied for the passport in Tampa. He was age 52, 5' 8 1/2" tall, with receding forehead. Blue eyes, brown hair. His picture is quite clear. Chas. W. Gold of Greensboro, NC testified he had known Holderness personally for 30 years. The passport was stamped and issued 14 Jan 1920 - he either did not have it in hand when he departed, or his expected departure was delayed....

He was born Caswell Co, NC on June 15th, 1867. Address was to be the Ochoe Bldg, San Juan, P.R. (the column stated "Address in United States" but this was obviously where he would be in San juan)

George Allan Holderness died 23 Dec 1947 at the Westbrook Sanatorium, Richmond, Henrico Co, VA where he had been for 4 years. His usual residence was in Tarboro, NC. He died of heart and renal disease. Married to Harriett Howard. Born 15 Jun 1867 in Caswell Co. His occupation was Chairman of the Board of Carolina Telephone & Telegraph Co. His father was William Holderness; his mother Sarah Foreman, both born in Virginia. Information taken from Hospital Records. Body was removed to Tarboro for burial.
