Samuel Packwood Morton

(1745 - 1834)

I have seen online that he was born 23 Sep 1745. It would not have been Prince Edward Co which was not formed from Amelia Co until 1753. However that was what Samuel stated in his pension application on 2 Jun 1834 when he was aged 88, and by then it was Prince Edward.

Samuel was entitled to a pension for service as a private in Capt. Peter Rogers' Company, Col. Haynes Morgan's Regiment, Virginia Line. There is a note that states he died 19 Jul 1834 on the Pension approval card.
21 Jul 1832 Clark Co KY. Samuel Morton, aged 86, applied for Bounty Land for his service in Col. Morgan's Regt of the Continental Line.
2 Jun 1834 Madison Co KY. Samuel Morton, aged 88, applied for Pension for his service in the Revolution. He served from Halifax Co VA where he lived at time, first as a Minute Man, patrolling against the Cherokee Indians, Under Col. Morgan. He also was stationed at the Long Islands of the Holstein to guard the magazine and publis stores. After discharge he again volunteered as a private in the Militia and was at different points near Chesapeake Bay. He served out three months then went into another Company under Genl. Muhlenburg. He recalls LaFayette was with the Army at several places. He was in this campaign for six months and discharged at Cabin Point. He served about 18 months altogether. He was born Sept 23, 1745, in Prince Edward Co VA and lived in Halifax Co during the War and until 1794 when he moved to Clark Co KY. In 1832, he moved to Madison Co. where he now resides. Signed: Samuel Morton
Josiah Collins, a clergyman, and John Duncan, testified to his age and that they believed him to have been a Revolutionary soldier. They stated he was a member in good standing of the Baptist Church.
18 Mar 1845 Letter from J. J. Montgomery, Masonic College MO, apparently a lawyer for Richard Morton asking about the Bounty Land and pension promised his father which was not ever received. He asked that answers be directed to Palmyra, MO. He stated he was inquiring "at the earnest Solicitations of his son who is an ignorant and an infirm man".
28 Jan 1851 Lancaster, MO. Note signed by Richard (X) Morton giving permission for one Vespasian Ellis to examine the Pension application and proofs filed by Samuel Morton.

Tradition is that Samuel Morton met a soldier named Nolan in the Revolutionary War - possible husband to Clarinda and father of her children. Paul & Jean Morton think it's possible Clarinda was a bastard daughter of Samuel's since no trace of a family has ever been found and there definitely seemed to be a connection between the Mortons and Nolans. This would of course make Clarinda and Richard Morton half-siblings.
I found the following early connection between Quin & Noland: Goochland Wills & Deeds: 19 Aug 1728 John Quin and Susanna his wife sold 350 acres to Thomas NOLUN [is this a predecessor of the Noland/Morton relationship?] of Hanover.

June 14, 1817 in Circuit Cout deposition, Samuel states that in 1787 he was a resident of Halifax County VA, living about 40 miles from his father Richard Morton. One Archlaeus Tanner intermarried with his sister Sarah Morton.
