John Breathed

(1779 - 25 May 1852)

John is said to have outlived all his siblings. However, it appears to me that Isaac outlived John by about six years. He is buried at St. Mark's Church, near Breathedsville, MD.

He appears to have have been buried near other Breatheds. He was age 72 years, 1 month, 9 days. Episcopal Church Graveyard at Lappan's Crossroads, Vol. 5 of "Washington County, Maryland, Cemetery Records". Listed in a Will index, 1852, Washington Co MD.
FindAGrave shows John Breathed, d. 25 May 1852. ??Husband of Kate Breathed, d. Nov 27, 1860 - I'm not sure about this relationship and believe this to be an error:
Wahington County Maryland Cemetery Records, Volume 5, shows that the grave of Kate Breathed, says, daughter of J.W. & A. M. Breathed, age 6 years 7 months 9 days, died 27 Nov 1860. I can only assume the stone may no longer be readable and someone made the assumption that Kate was the wife of John. I believe he was never married.

John Breathed was an early settler on the property where Balus Stigers' gristmill now is. It is believed that the first gristmill within the limits of the township was erected by him. This mill stood near the site of Stigers' mills.

Died:
At his residence in this County on the 25th ult., John Breathed, Esq. in the 73d year of his age.
Mr. Breathed was a quiet and peaceable, a modest and amiable man. He possessed great strength and decision of character was a good friend - without disguise or concealment. In his dealings he was just and upright - in his charities liberal and systematic. Few men could be found who have as regularly and perseveringly employed so large a portion of their means in aiding and encouraging relatives and friends in their respective stations and callings, as he. In his family he was an aged and venerable patriarch. he was frank, sober, honest - a good citizen - a good neighbor. He was for many years an exemplary member of the Episcopal church, without blame or reproach. In the closing moments of his earthly pilgrimage he was often heard exclaiming, "not my will, O Lord, but thine be done," etc. Etc. The clam and serene resignation and composure with which he met "the king of terrors" must form a lasting gratification to his surviving friends, and well calculated to make the stoutest hear exclaim - "Lord let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his."
