"J. C." Haden purchased 160 acres in Hunt County for $297 on 1 Jan 1877. This was distributed University Lands j#17 of the University Leagues 4 & 7 on the Middle Sulphur Fork of Red River, 13 miles from Greenville. Patent is dated 25 Jan 1889.

1880 Census. James Hayden in Hunt Co. Occupation Farmer. Wife and his first two children. There is a black girl, listed as Lizzie Hayden, age 11, born in TX that lives with family.

1900 Census. James lived in Durant Town, Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory. He was listed as a dry goods merchant.
Permelia's obituary which appeared in the Bonham newspaper in Fannin Co, stated they went to Durant in 1899.

1920 Census. Bryan Co OK, Durant City, ED 15, p.13, Dwelling 11. Address: 313 Third Avenue. James C. Haden age 67. Born MO, both parents born in KY. Retired. Wife Emma J. age 52, b. TX; her father born in SC, her mother born in GA. John L. DeFreese was a 35 year old roomer, listed as a Manager and born in Illinois. Also living in the house was a second family. Carroll Low age 30, born in OK. His father b. IL and his mother b. TX. Carroll was a Salesman in a Dry Goods Store. His wife was Kate, presumably the daughter, b. In TX; her parents born in MO. They had two daughters - Katrina age 7 and Martha J. age 1 year and 3 months.

1930 Census; OK, Bryan Co, Durant City. J. C. Haden, age 77, married at age 57 to Mrs. Emma Low who was 48 when he married her, now aged 63. Emma was born in Texas, her father b. SC, her mother b. Georgia. Had 3 step granddaughters in the household - Dorothy Paul Matthews, 13 and her sisters Christie, 10, and Betty, 8.. His widowed daughter Emma Haynes and her daughter were living there. Emma Haynes was age 43 and listed as Boarding House Proprietor. Her daughter Imogene was age 14. Also son John, age 55, and his wife Faye, age 42 - John was working as a Salesman for a Shoe Company. There were also 4 lodgers - E. C. Lakes, age 55, a salesman for the Biscuit Co and his wife Cammie age 42, Joe Houghton, age 45, widowed, a Dry Goods Merchant; Edna Gravill, single, age 45, a Dry Goods Salesman.

J. C. Haden Dies Here Early Today
J. C. Haden, aged 85 years, retired pioneer Durant merchant, died this morning at 1:20 o'clock at his home, 409 West Beech Street. His death came after a week's illness, but he had been in ill health for the past two years, and last summer sufferent an illness with almost proved fatal.
Mr. Haden, who was engaged in the drygoods business here for 21 years, prior to his retirement in 1919, was born at Springfiled, Ky. (actually Missouri), July 4, 1852. While yet a child he came with his parents to Ladonia, texas, where they made their home for years. He was married in 1874 to Miss Permilia Moore at Ladonia, and to the union were born four children, all of whom survive him. She passed away in Durant, Feb. 13, 1907.
With his family, Mr. Haden came to Durant in 1899 when he engaged in the mercantile business with his sons, J. P. Haden and A. C. Haden. While active he was prominent in the civic life of Durant and in church work. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and took an active part in the church work.
Besides his wife, whom he married here December 1, 1909, the deceased is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Carol Low, Dallas, and Mrs. Emma Haynes, Durant; two sons, J. P. Haden, Durant, and A. C. Haden, McAlester; one brother, Joe Haden, Ladonia, Texas, and a sister, Mrs. Joe Pickens, Quanah, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at the Holmes funeral home chapel, Friday afternoon at 2:20 o'clock with Rev. R. C. Miller, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

He is buried Highland Cemetery, Durant, Bryan Co, OK.
