William Asbill

(Abt 1760 - )

John And William Asbill are traditionally brothers, born in the late 1750's in North Carolina. They served in the Revolution under Leonard Marbury in his Continental Regt of Light Horse in the state of GA. Marbury swore out an affidavit, 24 Dec 1785, that they had served and were entitled to receive bounty land. They each received grants in Wilkes Co GA - land which had been ceded by the Creek & Cherokee to the King of England. It is not sure if they actually ever settled and improved that land.

William is on the 1790 census for Randolph County NC. Later census records show that likely the first six children were born in North Carolina. They may have returned to North Carolina because of white settlers displacing the Cherokee. Oral family history is that William and John may have been 1/2 Cherokee.

The family moved to Madison County KY in 1805. Brother John had already moved to Madison County about 1795. Their land was very close to the present-day boundary between Madison and Estill Counties on Red Lick Creek, although it felt in Estill after that county was formed.

The families started to move west about 1830; the first were John's sons, John Jr. and Tyre who left in 1829 for Missouri. About 10 years later, William's children John, Ross, Lydia, Betsy, and their families left for Missouri. Mary Nancy, William, Jr. & Joseph stayed in Kentucky.
