James Quin Morton

(1828 - 1867)

Found in US Census in 1850 - Schuyler Co MO, Hh 394
Quin Morton, 20, Farmer, b. KY
Charlotte, 18., b. KY

Paul Morton's great grandfather.

History of Crawford County, Arkansas, by Clara Eno has in Chapter 5 a list of brief deed abstracts. These were apparently compiled prior to the Crawford Co courthouse fire. It's regrettable that she did offer enough information, but her purpose seemed to be an attempt to identify wives.
There are a number to James Q. Morton - some may be mortgage deeds.
John P. Tinnes of Jasper Twp to James Q. Morton, 1849
Samuel Ford and wife Susan, deed to James Q. Morton, tract known as the Burchfield farm, Jasper township, 1859
Archibald Howell and wife Harriet [Burchfield] to James Q. Morton, Burchfield farm on Lee's Creek, 1859.
John Burchfield of Jasper Twp and wife Catherine to James Q. Morton, 1859.
Joseph Burchfield and Elizabeth to James Q. Morton, 1859
{These four deeds above might be a sale of an estate - perhaps the father of Susan, Harriet, John & Joseph Burchfield.]
Marcus Ballard, mortgage to James Q. Morton, 1859
James F. Farris and wife Mary to James Q. Morton, 1860.
Thomas Foster and wife Ellen to James Q. Morton, 1866.
Nancy Morton, administrator of J. Q. Morton [no date]

Fought in the Civil War as a Major. Served in Clark's Regt MO Infantry (CSA); Arkansas Cavalry, Independent Rangers.
History of Crawford County lists: Quint Morton, Major; J. B. Forrester, Capt; Tom Glover 1st Lt; Tom Campbell 2nd Lt; etc. Under Clarkson Buster's Battalion, Stand Watie's Command. Dismounted and put with 500 of Jackson's men in the 9th MO.

Quin died of consumption. I wonder if contracted it during the war.

The three sons, William, Sherrod, and Richard are living with their uncle Dick Morton near Uniontown in the 1870 Census. Actual census shows only William & Sherrod with their uncle. Richard lives with Mary Cottrel, age 19, and another 11 year old who might be her son.
