6 May 1778 Thomas Critcher apptd "Ranger" and qualified. Since his father was deceased by February of 1779, it seems likely this refers to the young man - although both were living in 1778.

7 Aug 1780 Thomas Critcher having bastard child by Mary Jett, gave bond for prevention of said child being a charge against the County.

6 Nov 1781 Thos. Critcher to pay Mary Jett 1000#'s [author Owen believed this was money - I very much suspect it was pounds of tobacco, the common currency, since it was for only a year's support) for maintaining a base born child begotten by her for the ensuing year.
August 1782. Ordered to pay £6 Specie.

9 Dec 1780. Esther Critcher, Samuel Morse, Nathaniel Rochester and Thomas Critcher, exrs of the will of Thomas Critcher, dec'd, made deed to Joseph Taylor and Phillip Voss, tenants in common.

Since his father was dead, the conclusion is that this is the young Thomas:

p.26; Aug 1788 Thos. Critcher appointed Collector of Tax for one of the districts of Granville County for the year. In May of 1788, p.21, an "Abram" Critcher is on the list of tax collectors - since there is no other evidence of a Critcher of this given name - perhaps this was a recording error.
p.84; Feb 1790 Elijah Mitchell and Thos. Critcher proved deed from John Gilliam to Jos. Davis for 341 acres.
p.103 Feb 1793 License to Thos. Critcher for Ordinary. His father had been licensed in 1775 for the same purpose.
