John H. Honeycutt

(1794 - 24 Mar 1857)

There is great confusion about Moses Honeycutt's son John - if he had a son named John.
I have another autosomal match to Moses' son John born 1782, who married Sarah Moser. This John seems a bit too old, born several years before Moses likely married.
A database on WorldConnect states that John Honeycutt married Tabitha Hampton - still different from either of the two above. However, the John that married Tabitha/Talitha Hampton is also shown as born 1818, died 1861.

Some databases show John, son of Moses as having married Tabitha Hampton and then Jane Bradford.

Still other online database gives his wife as Jane Bradford - that John married her 1815, Burke or Buncombe, NC. There is a Honeycutt Cemetery of Bradford Hill, Little Creek, Yancey, NC. The Honeycutt Cemetery is most likely named after John Honeycutt (b. 1787 - d. 1839); s/o Moses Honeycutt and Lucinda Stout. He married Jane Bradford and their son, Austin N. Honeycutt, is the only marked grave. They have marked the following graves:
2. HONEYCUTT, John [suspected - commemorative cross]
b. 1787 - d. abt. 1839
[s/o Moses J. Honeycutt and Margaret Lucinda Stout; he married Jane Bradford about 1828 in Burke Co., NC]
NOTE: Commemorative Cross fabricated and installed by BBradford-Pytel on 9-5-2013. It is unknown how or why John was "killed on Bald Creek" which is a tributary near his property and close to this cemetery. During the 1860 Census, this area of Little Creek was known as "Bald Creek Twp." Per the land records of Yancey Co., NC:
"5-428: 24 March 1858, James R. Love for himself and James R. Love, J. B. Love, D. Love, W. Welch as execs. of Robert Love decd, late of Haywood Co. NC, to John Duncan, $1, a deed to John Bradford Jr. represented as destroyed, this deed to convey title to John Duncan Sr. to 100 acres on Big Bald Mountain Creek adj. where John Honeycut was killed, adj. Big Drift; witness William Bradford, J.R. Love Jr. /s/ J.R. Love, J.R. Love exec. R. Love decd, Dillard Love. (FHL film 571,526)
4-583: 27 Sept. 1862, John Duncan Sr. of Yancey Co. NC to Alford Brackins of same, $19, 6 acres on the waters of Bald Mountain creek adj. old Bradford line, the Polly Cooper Branch, where Honeycutt [John Honeycutt] was "kild" on the [Big Bald Mnt] creek; wit. L.S. Phillips, Samuel (X) Estep. " (FHL film 571,526).
3. HONEYCUTT, Jane BRADFORD [suspected - unmarked]
b. 1810 - bef. 1860 ?
[d/o John Bradford and Hannah (Choate?); w/o John #2; children:
1. Naoma "Omy md. Rev. Wilburn Howell Briggs
2. Noah W. md. Leah R. Lewis
3. John Jr. md. Talitha Hampton
4. Austin Nathaniel #1 md. Elizabeth Betsy Wilson.
NOTE: During the 1840 Yancey Co. Census, Jane was head of household with her 3 sons and daughter and living next door to Pitman Williams and family; during the 1850 Census, she and her son Austin moved in with her single brother, William"Billy" Bradford. I could not find her in any 1860 census; thus her death date is unknown.

Children of John Honeycutt and Jane Bradford from another database seem instead to match those of John Honeycutt & Sarah Moser are:
+Michael Honeycutt, b. November 15, 1815, Tennessee, d. date unknown.
+Dorcas Honeycutt, b. 1805, North Carolina, d. date unknown.
+Austin Honeycutt, b. 1807, North Carolina, d. date unknown.
+Sarah Elizabeth Honeycutt, b. July 10, 1813, Tennessee, d. March 03, 1891, Claiborne County, TN.
+Alvis Honeycutt, b. 1821, North Carolina, d. 1862.
James Matthew Honeycutt, b. November 20, 1830, Yancy County, NC, d. June 17, 1893, Roane County, TN.
Nancy Honeycutt, b. Abt. 1831, North Carolina, d. date unknown.

John may have had a brother Uriah Rice Honeycutt, b. 1808. Said to have married Keziah Tipton about 1831. I suspect the John who had the brother Uriah is NOT this man in Louisana.

The Urias (Uriah) Honeycutt that appears in the 1840 Claiborne Co, TN Census is marked in the age range of 50-60 meaning he was born between 1780-1790.
The John Honeycutt that appears in the 1840 Claiborne Co, TN Census is marked in the age range of 50-60 meaning he too was born between 1780-1790. This John can then be found in the 1860 Union Co, TN Census (Union Co was formed from Claiborne Co) and his age is listed as 78 meaning he was born about 1782 in NC.
There is an estate inventory in Claiborne Co, TN for an Urias Honeycutt dated in 1843 with Austin Honeycutt as the administrator. This estate inventory is most likely for the same Urias Honeycutt that appeared in the 1840 Claiborne Co, TN census. So he probably died before 1843.
These two men, John and Urias, are very close in age and I would think they were brothers since John had a son named Urias. But both these men's ages do not agree to the sons of Moses Honeycutt and Margaret Stout that most researchers have. So either they are not their sons or other researchers have the wrong children listed for Moses Honeycutt & Margaret Stout.

My g-g-g-grandfather was John Honeycutt born in NC ca 1794. died in LA in 1855. He was married to Cady Watson who also was born in NC. Some of John's children were Calvin, Alvin, Albert, Israel and Mary. I have not been able to ID the other 4 children that he supposedly had.
I realize that your John died in 1824 but do you think it was possible he was related my John?
There two John's living in Union Parish at the same time. One was married to Mary Feazel.
