Please note that it is all over the Internet, particularly on WorldConnect and in the trees at Ancestry.com, that this man was a son of a Michael Woods & Hannah Wallace of Albemarle, VA. He has been confabulated with a different James WOODS who lived in Madison Co KY and was married three times and never had a son named Dudley as cited in the following will. Not only is the research faulty - as good research does indicate that Michael & Hannah never even had a son named James, but Y-DNA has shown that this James WOODS who married Mary "Polly" Hampton and at least two other ladies, and also lived in Madison Co KY at the same as James WOOD cannot possibly have been a son of Michael Woods of Albemarle, Virginia.

[I have seen this man's full name as James Warren Wood, Sr. but I doubt that his middle name was "Warren". Few men of his generation had a middle name. More likely his son, James Warren Wood was occasionally called James Wood Jr. to distinguish him from his father and someone decided they both had the middle name.]

No James Junr listed and this is not a good fit for this man - unless the tally mark was simply in the wrong column.

There were two men indexed as James Wood in Clark Co in 1830 - one, a single man, age 20-30, is I believe, James Mood, not James Wood. The other listed as James Wood, Esq.

In 1840 - there was still a James Wood in Clark Co, but apparently a younger man: 1m under 5, 1m 5-10, 1m 30-40. 1f 30-40. The age is close to that of James Warren Wood - but he would have a son and two daughters in his household in 1840.

I, James Wood, of the County of Madison and State of Kentucky being very much pained in body but of a perfect sound mind thanks be to God for his mercies taking into consideration the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed unto all me once to die, do make and ordain this to be my last will and testament, that is to say first of all I recommend my soul to God that gave it and as touching such mortality properly as God has been pleased to bless me with in this life I give (and) devise and dispose of in the following manner, viz., I give unto my son, Dudley Wood, my farm on which I now reside to do everything that may seem best to him and anything that my son Dudley shall do shall be as binding as though I had done it myself. I also wish my son Dudley to take care of his mother during her life and after her death if my son Dudley sees proper to remain on the place. I desire him to remain unmolested by any and every person and whenever my son thinks proper to sell the land I desire for him to take the third part of what it brings and for him to dispose of it as he shall think fit and the balance of the money I want equally divided amongst all the rest of my children to do with as they shall think proper freely by them to be possessed and enjoyed. And I do hereby utterly disallow, revoke and disavow all and every other testimonials, wills, legacies, bequeaths by me in any wise made before I do acknowledge in the presence of God this to be my last will and testament and no other. James did not state his other children. Two daughters - Lucinda & Charlotte - were placed in his family but their marriage records in Madison Co, KY show that their father was Hezekiah "Hazzard" Wood and they were not daughters of James at all.
