James Stamps

James Stamps was born Aug. 6, 1779 in Henry Co., VA. He married Sarah
Betty Davis who was born 1790 to Nathaniel Davis and his wife Eliza-
beth Kelsey.

The 1820 census of Franklin Co., TN indicates the following: James and his wife were between 26 to 45. They had 5 sons and 1 daughter under 10 years.

During the 1830 census of Franklin Co., TN, he was 40 to 50; his wife was 30 to 40 years. They had 4 sons under 5; 1 son 5 to 10; 1 son 10 to 15; 3 sons 15 to 20; 1 daughter 5 to 10; 1 daughter 15 to 20.

In 1840, he and his wife were 50 to 60 years old. There was 1 daughter 15 to 20; 1 son 15 to 20; 1 son 20 to 30; 1 son 30 to 40.

He made a will which was witnessed by D.B. Stamps, Elisha Sims, Joel McCutcheon and Jon A.Corn on Sept. 14, 1841. He died about Sept. of 1841 in Franklin County. His will was admitted to probate in Franklin County on December 15, 1841.

When the 1860 census was taken in Franklin County, James' widow, Sarah, lived with her married daughter, Sarah Jane Embry. On Aug. 29, 186, by a written instrument, Sarah Stamps gave her daughter Sarah Jane Embry 4 negro slaves and 3 mules. Sarah Stamps died shortly after 1860.
