Tithables, taken in 1767 by John Dix for Pittsylvania Co., Va, names John Stamps, 15 to 16, and his brother Timothy Stamps. In 1777,Henry Co., Va., John Stamps, age 24 to 25, and his brother, Thomas Stamps, renounced allegiance to the King of England.

On Aug. 12, 1797, John Stamps purchased 200 acres on Cloud's Creek on the Broad River in Oglethorpe Co., GA. As a Revolutionary War soldier in 1805, he had two land draws in Oglethorpe County. On Dec. 3, 1805 he was given a deed for 200 1/2 acres in Baldwin Co., 2nd District, Georgia.

On May 2, 1806, John signed a receipt for his share in the personal property of his father Timothy's estate. Under his father's will, he received 262 acres on Shoal Creek in Clarke Co., GA. On Nov. 23, 1807 he and his wife, Purthena, of Clarke County, sold 222 acres on Shoal Creek to Thomas Greer for $1,160.00.3 On Nov. 23, 1807, he sold 41 acres on the same creek to Charles Dougherty for $123.00.

As early as 1810, John was arranging to settle in Franklin Co., TN. On June 14, 1810 he bought 125 acres on the waters of Elk River in the 20th District of Franklin Co., TN; the deed being signed by Willie Blount,Governor of Tennessee. On June 14, 1810, John purchased 100 acres on the Elk River, receiving a deed signed by the governor of Tennessee. On May 6, 1811 both deeds were recorded in Knoxville. On Feb. 16, 1813 he bought 200 acres on the north side of the Elk River for $300.00 from John Powell and recorded the deed on Feb. 25, 1813. In 1810 he was 58 years of age.

The 1812 tax list for Franklin County contains the names of John Stamps and his sons, William, George and James Stamps. In 1820 the Franklin County census indicated that John and his wife were over 45 and had 2 slaves. There were no children at home. The 1830 census of Franklin County indicated that John and his wife were 80 to 90. They had slaves: 1 male under 10; 1 female 10 to 24; 1 female 36 to 55.
