Andrew Warde book had exact date for date of birth. Gave middle name as "Buell". Descendants think the "B" may have stood for Benton. He was always called Porter or Port.
1850 Census: initials looked more like Peter B. F. In their father's obituary, his brother Charles gave his name as Peter B. P. so maybe his name was Peter Buell/Benton Porter Allen.
A solution to his name may lie in the following. In reading a book about the Battle of Queenston Heights, 1812, in which his grandfather, Peter Buell Allen, was Lt. Col. of a militia regiment, I discovered the following. The Quartermaster General for the state militia of NY was, at the time of the War of 1812, Peter Buel Porter of Buffalo. He was directly involved with rebuilding of the forts and constructing bateaux for the crossing of the Niagara River and would have been well known to the first Peter Buell Allen. Peter B. Porter was born 1773, died 1844. He had joined with Benjamin Barton, Augustus Porter [his brother] and Joseph Annin in 1807 to form Porter, Barton & Co which openerated the carrying business from Lewiston to Fort Schlosser [sites of the camps on the Niagara just prior to the Battle of Queenston]. Politically Peter B. Porter was opposed to Stephen Van Renssalaer who commanded the American forces at Queenston and thoroughly bungled the matter. Porter constantly warned against the inadequacies of the Army and they quarreled frequently. In 1810, Porter did serve on a commission to investigate a route for the a canal across New York - the Erie Canal. Van Ressalaer and DeWitt Clinton also served on this committee. A brother of Peter B. P. Allen's was named DeWitt Clinton Allen. It is notable that their great-uncle Nathanial Allen was a contractor on the Erie Canal. I believe that Peter Buell Porter and Peter Buell Allen, both present at Queenston in 1812, were in fact third cousins.

Family records from descendants give his birth year as 1845.

His residence is listed as Canadian, I.T. in the obituary of his father in 1901. Descendants of his referred to him as "Porter" and he's listed as Porter in the 1880 Census.

Enumerated with Peter's parents was a three-year-old boy named McCoy - some have placed him as a child of Peter and Mary's. However, ten years later he was not with either family.

AR as were both her parents. Clarence M., Step Son age 8 [surname unreadable]. William O. Heflin, son age 5, Lovdie M. age 3 years, 3 months, and ?Ivie P. age 11 months, daughters. Michael Webb, age 28 and a school teacher, is a boarder. Peter B. P. Allin, Grandfather, age 73, b. AR, both parents b. NY, also lives with the family. He was widowed.

Obituary (newspaper source unknown - but probably in Kern Co, CA)
Porter B. Allen, 80-year-old retired rancher of Wister, Okla., who had been making his home in Kern County for about a month, died last night at a local hospital. He was the father of Mrs. George W. Griffith of Wood Patch; Ed Allen of Watsonville, Emmet Allen of McAllister, and Charles and Marshall Allen [Emmett & Marshall were in Pittsburg Co OK in 1920] and Mrs. Etta Griffith, all of Oklahoma. He also leaves nine grandchildren, Clyde, Addie, Maudie, and Edgar Griffith of Wood Patch, and ?Elsis/Kisie, Vernie and John Allen, Millie King and Mamie Griffith.
The body is at Payne & Sons mortuary where funeral arrangements are pending the arrival of his two sons from Watsonville and McAllister.
[If Port's body was taken back to Oklahoma, his grave apparently not marked - at least there is no marker next to his wife Mary. In fact, cemetery records indicate he was buried Union Cemetery, Bakersfield, Kern Co, CA. Grave unmarked. FindAGrave Memorial #125577640]

Aged Oklahoma Rancher Passes
Porter B. Allen, a retired rancher of wister, Oklahoma, died today at a local hospital after a short illness. He was eighty years of age. The body is at Payne and Sons where funeral arrangements are awaiting the arrival of his sons from Hollister and Watsonville.
Mr. Allen is survied by Mrs. George W. Griffith of Weed Patch, Ed Allen of Watsonville, Emmet Allen of Hollister, and Charles & Marshal Allen and Mrs. Etta Griffith all of Oklahoma. He alos leaves nine grandchildren, Clyde, Andrie, Maudie & Edgar Griffith of Wee Patch, and Elsie Vernie and John Allen, Millie King and Mamie Griffith.


Note: Clyde, Audy, Maudie, & Edgar Griffith were the children of daughter Minerva Emma. Elsie & Vernie were children of Porter Emmett Allen. John Allen, Millie King & Mamie Griffith were children of son Edward F. Allen. There were several other grandchildren. The children of Edward's first marriage were omitted, as were the children of son Marshall, and the son of Charles H. Allen. Port actually had 17 living grandchildren that I know of at the time of his death.
