Sarah J. Morris, widow of Jesse, applied for his Confederate Pension, 14 Aug 1911, from Conech County. She cited his death date as 19 Apr 1905. Jesse served as a Private, Company C, 9th Alabama Cavalry. The index card for Pension File #28941, notes she was stricken from the list 3 Dec 1913, but restored 21 Aug 1915. Jesse had not been found on the rolls of Company C, or any other Company of the 9th Regiment.
In her defense, Sarah stated he had served under Capt John McKensey, Genl. Roddy's Cavalry Brigade of Alabama Volunteers. He served honorably and did not desert. He enlisted in Coosa Co. H. H. Wilson and W. G. McPherson of Sylacauga made affadavits, 29 Jul 1911. The affadavits were declared as not sufficient - they seemed perfectly in order to me as both said they had first had knowledge of his service.
On 1 Jul 1915, she stated she was now over age 76, born 19 Apr 1839. Thomas B. Jones swore that he a Confederate Soldier acquainted with Sarah J. Morris and he had first hand knowledge that Jesse R. Morris enlisted as a Private in Co, C, Roddy's Brigade, Stewart's Battalion, in August of 1864 and he was honoably discharged in 1865. J. A. J. Morris and W. H. Wood of Conecuh Co attested to the veracity of Sarah J. Morris. The pension board of Conecuh County decided she should be reinstated.
One of the papers in the file states that Sarah Morris owns 183 acres of land in Coosa Co, worth $1000.
