John Simpson "Simp" Dixon
(15 Nov 1848 - 14 Feb 1870)
According to the accounts of the Lee-Peacock feud, Simp, Billy & Bob Dixon, and their cousin Charlie from Hopkins Co were all killed during the feud.
Note: Bob Dixon, brother to Simp and Billy was only a young boy and he wasn't killed.
Simp after his involvement in the feud went on to infamy as a cohort of John Wesley Harden. In his autobiography Harden refers to Simp as the most dangerous man in Texas. Simp was gunned down by Federal troops near Mexia, Texas.
Simp is buried Fort Parker Memorial Park, Groesbeck, Limestone Co TX.
One story on FindAGrave:
Simp was the last of the Dixon clan to be killed as a result of the Lee-Peacock Feud after the Civil War.
He actually was killed in January or February of 1870 by Sgt. Adam Desch from a military detachment that had been summoned from Waco to confront Dixie and the group with him. This occurred close to Cottin Gin, a place that no longer exists. Rumor had it that he was hunting down Lewis Peacock who was hiding out in Johnson County (next door to Limestone County). Lewis Peacock was working at a lumber mill at that time.
According to local legend, Dixon sought after and killed a gang of three who were raping and robbing women. He was the only one brave enough and bad enough to do it. He hung two of the people from a tree and that tree had a rope hanging in it for the next thirty years. After his death, with no headstone on his grave, local women who considered him a hero for ridding the countryside of the gang, put forth the money and effort to provide him a headstone. Even a local teacher in the 1940's made mention in her sixth or seventh grade class in Groesbeck that they should raise a monument in his honor for his efforts.
Grave at a diagonal to rest of the gravesites. People who buried him did so because he was always crossways with the world.
