First appears by himself on a Halifax Co tax list 1789. Had he just turned 21? Only himself and a horse were noted. Or, given this early date, was this the "other" William Thomas whose records I've found in Halifax, who was a tavern owner in the early 1800's?

Philip was listed with two males over 21, and stated there was a son. Charles listed next to Philip and already owned slaves.

I believe these to probably be the Tavern Owner, William Thomas:

December court 1802. William Thomas, Meads Anderson, & Joseph Petty were appraisers of the estate of John Whitworth, dec'd, John Whitworth, admin. Returned to the court 27 Dec 1802.

The name is so common that is impossible to tell if any or all of these could be this man:
There is a marriage record in Halifax County VA, 3 Jul 1794 - William Thomas to Frances Crowder. George Thomas was bondsman. The tavern owner, seems to appear in a court record with wife Frances in 1803. There is also a guardianship record, 1804, for a young William Thomas, son of George Thomas, deceased.

and another marriage record, 8 Jan 1798 - William Thomas to Hannah Chissler/Chessher. Her father was Thomas. Can't be the tavern owner who was still married to Frances in 1803. Can't be his ward who was too young if he needed a guardian. This one is most likely to be the son of Philip & Mary.

and still another
William Thomas married Rebecca Perkerson, 27 Nov 1816, Halifax Co. John Perkerson, bondsman. Could be a second marriage for one of the above, or the young man who required a guardian in 1804, but is now grown up.

William was deceased at the time his sister Tabitha wrote her will in 1848.
