EDWARD GRISWOLD

(26 Jul 1607 - 30 Aug 1691)

Possibly married Margaret as early as 1628, if birth years of children are correct.

The following statement is outdated - Edward's ancestor as well as those of Matthew, Francis, and Michael, who also came to America, have been well documented.

In 1943, Glenn E. Griswold reported, "In the study of the life of Edward Griswold, the American ancestor, it must be kept in mind that we have at present no authentic record of his parents or birthplace. All the various statements thus far published in reference to that are pure conjecture, and thus have no standing in genealogical history."

New England Families Genealogical and Memorial, by William Richard Cutter.
Griswold. "The English Griswolds were an ancient county family established at Solihull, Warwickshire, England before 1400. The were descended from John Griswold who came from Kenilworth about the middle of the fourteenth century, and settled in Holihull."
"....Griswold immigrants, Matthew and Edward, whom we know were brothers, both came in 1639 and settled in Windsor, CT. Another brother of Matthew and Edward remained in England, Thomas, as proved by the deposition of George Griswold, son of Edward, in 1700. The father of ...Matthew, Edward & Thomas was Edward Griswold, of Kenilworth, Warwickshire." [Extensive research has shown that Matthew and Edward were half brothers and that Matthew's brother Thomas did remain in England - but their father was GEORGE Griswold, not Edward.]

Edward emigrated to Windsor, Connecticut (Wethersfield) with his half-brother Matthew in 1639. Among the other passengers were Mr. William Whiting, Undertaker, and Rev. Ephraim Huet, past minister at Wraxall, England, of the Puritan faith.
He was a deputy to the General Court in 1658, 1660, 1662, & 1663. In 1659 he built the Old Fort at Springfield.
He was granted land at Paquonoc but did not move there until after the title of the Indians was fully extinguished in 1642. He was a resident there in 1649. His sons George & Joseph inherited this homestead.
In 1663, Edward and his son John moved to Hammonasset, later called Killingworth, probably from the the name Kenilworth Parish in England of which Wraxall was a part. Present Clinton, CT, is the location of Killingworth.
In 1669, Edward Griswold, and sons-in-law Samuel Buel and Jonas Westover were recorded as freeman in Killingworth.

From Family Histories and Genealogies by Edward Elbridge Salisbury and Eveleyn McCurdy Salisbury, 1892 - as quoted in The American Genealogist, Vol. 39 (1962) "Griswold Ancestry in England", by Genevieve Tylee Kiepua, p.176.
1. 15 May 1684 Edward Griswold, aged about 77 [b. say 1607], gave testimony that he came to New England in 1639. Mr. William Whiting, dec'd, had been the financial sponsor for the ship in which he came. Matthew Griswold, aged 64 stated he came the same year.
{The testimony of Edward Griswold, aged about 77 years, is that about the year 1639 Mr. William Whiting, Decd. was Undertaker for a shipp in England, in which Shipp I came to New England. The sd Mr. Whiting borrowed of one Mr. John Saint Nicholas about two hundred pounds, wch I had the Bill to receive here, wch money reced. against Mr. Whiting by Mr. Nicholas order here. And at the time many passengers came over, severall of which settled in Windsor, and a gennerall expectation there was at that time, as appeared by discourse of many more passengers to come, and some of not, as the said Mr. St. Nicholas for one, by which means Land at Windsor near the towne and ready for improvement was at a high price; and about that time the said Mr. Whiting bought, as was Comonly reeported, Mr. Ludlow's Land at Windsor, that is, when land was dear, and I know Mr. Ludlow went away then in a short time after. But afterwards people that were expected out of England, not comeing in Such numbers as was looked for, Mr. Ludlow ( ) to England, and others removeing to the Sea Side, the Lands at Windsor fell very much in price from what they were at when Mr. Ludlow sold to Mr. Whiting, So that Generally, to my Observance, Lands were not sold but at half the price as before or about half the price. Further, I testifie that the above said Mr. St. Nicholas, living near Mr. Hewett in England, did manifest his desire to settle by Mr. Hewett in New England, and by my observance of Mr. St. Nicholas words and actions and also Mr. Whiting, did apprehend that Mr. Whiting bought Mr. Ludlow's Lands to accomodate the said Mr. St. Nicholas. Mr. Edward Griswold personally appeared this 15 May 1684, and made oath to the above written before me. John Allyn, Assist.]
2. 9 May 1700 George Griswold, age 67, testified that in youth he lived with his father, Edward Griswold, in Kenilworth, Warwickshire and had heard his father say that the house they lived in there belonged to Edward's brother Mathew, and he had seen a letter of Thomas Griswold of Kenilworth intimating that Thomas lived in said house belonging to his brother Matthew
3. 19 Jan 1737/8 Capt George Griswold, age 72, and Mr. John Griswold, age 697, sons of George Griswold, both of Windsor, CT, testified that their grandfather's name was Edward Griswold; their great-grandfather was George Griswold who had three sons, the eldest named Edward, the second named Matthew and the third of youngest, named Thomas. The first two came to New England from Killingsworth in Warwickshire. Edward's eldest son has always been reputed to be Francis Griswold.
4. Margaret, wife of Edward Griwold died 23 Aug 1760.
5. John Riley in his will dated 13 may 1674, named his brother John Belding, his brother Emanuel Buck, and his cousin Michael Griswold [my note: a cousin in this time period was more likely a nephew]
The Kenilworth [England] parish registers prior to 1676 were destroyed by fire.
The Parish of Wooten Wawen, chapelry of Henley, has the following:
Baptism of Edward, son of George Griswold, 26 Jul 1607
Baptism of George, son of Roger Griswold, 6 Nov 1574
Burial of Dousabel, wife of George Griswold, 28 Aug 1615 - this death supposes that Mathew and Thomas were born to a second wife and would have been half-brothers to Edward.

Buried Clinton, Middlesex County, Connecticut. A memorial stone was put there by the Griswold Family Association, next to the burial spot of his wife Margaret. Her stone with only "M G" and the year 1670, is the oldest marker in the cemetery.

The Greswold Family, which treats Edward rather lightly, lists only 7 children for him and gives very little information. They seem to have concentrated more on Michael and Matthew Griswold and their families. The CD also published by the Griswold Family Association, The First Five Generations in America, 1990, does list all twelve.
