Fought in the Narragansett War. Granted 6 acres for his services in the Indian Wars. Buried in the Congregational Cemetery, Clinton, CT.

The name of the town was first Kenilworth/Killingworth; today it is Clinton.

John's will dated 6 Jun 1713, New London, mentioned his daughter Mary Avery. She was married to James Avery, a great grandson of Christopher Avery, the immigrant ancestor of the Groton Averys.
