Individual Details
MARGARET [Griswold]
(1610 - 23 Aug 1670)
Possible surnames for Margaret include Hicks, Diamond and Blencow. The only definite fact seems to be her date and place of death.
Early research has placed Margaret in the family of Robert Hicks, cited in New England Genealogy, Vol. 1, p.250, but that family was already in Plymouth in 1621 - Edward was married to Margaret in England after this date.
Edward's second wife was Sarah Diamond - apparently the source for giving the same surname to Margaret.
She was definitely not Margaret Blencow, although a Margaret Blencow did mary an Edward Griswold, but in 1618 and in Cubbington (Warwickshire, England). Edward Griswold, the immigrant was baptized in Wooten Waven, apparently lived in Killingworth and was only about 12 in 1618. Records in Cubbington show that both that Edward and his wife Margaret died there in 1633.

Buried in Clinton CT Congregational Burying Ground: gravestone marked M.G. 1670.
This grave site is reportedly the oldest in the Old First Church (Indian River) Cemetery. Marked only with "M.G. 1670", it is believed to be the burial place of Margaret Griswold, wife of Killingworth (now Clinton - Middlesex Co, MA) settler Edward Griswold. Serveral birth surnames have been posited for Margaret, most frequently HICKS, but all have been discredited in family literature.

...the Griswold Family Association has conducted much more research and the line shown here is the line currently published.
"Her gravestone is the oldest now standing in the Clinton Congregational burying-ground. It is marked "M. G. 1670". It is reported by some one that Margaret's maiden name was Hicks, on what authority it is not known to us."
"Various names have been given to Margaret, the wife, but let it be understood that this is without any authority cited, and that no records thus far found have disclosed her name or parentage; and to set forth something of such importance without positive authority only results in confusion and disappointment. For many years search to solve this question has continued by brilliant historians, without success."
Assorted other names are given this cemetery - Old First Church Cemetery, Indian River Cemetery.
