The George Greswold mentioned in the eleventh generation in the Visitation of Warwickshire, 1619, may be the father of Edward Griswold, who emigrated from Kenilworth, England, to Windsor, Conn. in 1639. It is clear from a deposition made by Captain George Griswold that the great grandfather's name was George Griswold, who had three sons, Edward, Matthew and Thomas. There is thus the possibility that George Griswold, father of Edward and Matthew, is to be identified with the George Griswold of the eleventh generation. More than this possibility, or at most probability, cannot be affirmed as yet. The Kenilworth parish records prior to 1630, which might have settled the question, were destroyed during the wars of the Commonwealth, and the Griswold family in England has become extinct. There are facts enough, however, to make the connection between the Griswolds, of Windsor, Conn. and the Greswold heraldic family of Kenilworth and Solihull, Warwickshire, at least possible if not probable.

Recent Y-DNA tests show that Edward and a Michael Griswold's descendants are apparently related. I saw no tests that led back to Matthew.

Found in an Ancestry family tree which provides further ideas for research on this family:
The principal information source for the Griswold ancestry is The Greswolds Family: Twelve Generations in England, researched and editied by Robert L. & Esther G. French and compiled by Coralee Griswold (1999). Note: the only place this manuscript seems to be available is at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Only an outline of the earlier Greswold generations is presented here. Those interested in source citations, lineage analysis and further details are encouraged to contact The Griswold Family Association [they have a website]. Refer also to the series of short articles in The American Genealogist (Vols. 39-41), by Kiepura, Jacobus, and Hunt, on the GRISWOLD ancestry. Each article builds on and corrects the preceding, so they should be consulted as a unit.

The American Genealogist (Vols. 39-41)
The last of the articles, Vol 41, p.100, quoted the following Chancery proceedings from the Public Record Office. No date in the document but a later note says 17 Nov 1607.
The Bill: Roger Greswold of Kenilworth in regard to fields called Broomfields & others, in the possession of Thos Braband, Anne his mother then wife of Thomas Hart, Thomas Hart & Richard & Alice Holmes. These lands were purchased by Roger Greswold deceased father of the petitioner and were entailed to the male heirs of William Greswold, father of the said Roger deceased. One Thomas Greswold was apparently about to purchase these lands. Petitioner alleges that Roger senior had thought wrongfully that the land was not entailed and sold it to Thomas Braband. The defendants replied that Thomas Braband's father John had bought this property from Roger senior, deceased.
Interestingly, the will of a Matthew Griswold of Stonleigh (near Kenilworth), dated 1701 mentions lands in Beggarspath. Then the Will of Thomas Griswold of "Stonley" dated 28 Feb 1620 mentions rent of house & grounds in Kennelworth, his close called Beggarspath and grounds called Broomfield, alias Thickthorne. Both seem to refer to the "fields called Broomfields & others" in the chancery case.
Because of the above case, this pedigree was suggested:

Roger Griswold of Rowington, Will of 1545, named a son William, b. about 1515.
His children were
Thomas of Rowington, Will proved 1761 whose wife Elizabeth , will of 1614, married John - Benford and they were parents of Roger of Rowington b. maybe 1565, will 1613. Thomas is not proved as a son, but his will refers to the land called Broomfield.
and
Roger of Kenilworth, b. 1540 or so, d. before the case above in 1607

Children of Roger, d. bef. 1607 were
Roger of Kenilworth, of age in 1607 - file the chancery suit.
Thomas of Stoneleigh, d. 1620 in Kenilworth
George, bapt 1574, as son of Roger, at Wooten Wawen who was the father of Edward, George and Matthew who emigrated to the colonies, and Matthew of Stonley, will of 1701/2.
