John Bird

(Abt 1730 - )

Online databases give several possibilities for families of the John Birds found in Augusta Co VA.

Given the strong naming patterns among the other sons of Andrew Bird, I suspect both of these may be incorrect.

One school of thought is that John Bird, son of Andrew & Magdalena, married Susanna Margaret Wintrow who appears to have been at least 15 years younger than he. Their first child born maybe a year or two before 1770 when John would have been 40ish. They went on to have eight children before 1781: Jacob, Catherine "Margaret", Adam, Mary, Frederick, William, another John b. 3 Sep 1780 in Augusta Co, died 1814, married Susanna Hartman, and David. This family lived in Bath County, Virginia, which had been formed out of Augusta, Botetourt, & Greenbrier [now part of West Virginia] in 1790. Most of the above children have marriage records in Bath Co around 1800. The online databases quote counties for various records that do not exist in Virginia, but do now exist in West Virginia. My biggest problem with this lineage is John Bird's age when his children were born - there could have been another generation in between. I also find nothing to tie this John back to the family of Andrew Bird. The research seems a bit shaky.

Another possibility is that this John Bird, whose wife is said to have been a Sarah, was the father of the Byrds that were in Montgomery Co VA. Sarah remarried to William Burch after the death of John Byrd. One online database lists children of John and Sarah as born between 1750 and 1762: another John, Richard, Samuel, Mary, Henry, Elizabeth, and William. Elizabeth Byrd married John Harmon in 1787 in Montgomery Co. Elizabeth's brother Richard married Elizabeth Buster and her sister Mary married William Buster. Some of her siblings married and remained in Grayson Co [formed from Montgomery Co] others moved on to Tennessee and Pulaski Co KY. My research indicates that these siblings were born at least ten years later - I find no sibling named John but did find two more sisters, Mildred & Jane. Again, I find nothing to tie this family back to the family of Andrew Bird. However, I do have at least one autosomal DNA match to a descendant of Andrew/Abraham Bird - that person's tree quite small, though, and the match could certainly be elsewhere. I do have confirmed matches to through several of the children of John & Sarah of Montgomery Co VA.

There is also this record found in Chalkey's Chronicles - 1756, Sept 13th & 14th, John Bird at Jackson River, killed. Mrs. Bird and 6 children, at Jackson River, prisoners.
17 Nov 1756 - James Boreland's bond with John Graham & Jas. Arbuckle as administrator of John Bird.
Aug 16, 1758. Sarah, orphan of John Bird dec'd, age 15, chose John Dean as her guardian. This places her birth as 1743 and makes her father John born at least by 1720, perhaps earlier.
On 18 May 1754, Adam Dickinson had sold John Bird, 215 acres, corner William Jackson. Delivered to John Dean on June, 1765.
In fact as early as 13 Dec 1744, John Bird was paid out of the estate of Daniel Monahan in Augusta Co.
This would seem to indicate a John Bird was present in Augusta Co that was not the son of Andrew.

Another John Bird shows up in the records of Augusta Co. much later.
19 Dec 1780. A John Bird was on the road crew from Staunton to Christian's Creek.
1787. John Byrd signed a committal of prosecution of John McKee for attempted murder of Charles Wall.
18 Dec 1788. John Bird appraised the estate of William Chestnut.
