George Carter

( - Abt 1785)

George said to have been the son of Thomas Carter and Sarah Haynie of Lancaster Co Virginia. There are some 14 children listed for George in the online database. Twelve were listed in the Carter book, and even he states they may have had other children.

I found the following book on Ancestry.com, The Descendants of Capt. Thomas Carter of "Barford" Lancaster County, Virginia, by Joseph Lyon Miller, self-published, 1912. The book is based on a Diary for the year 1858 compiled by John Carter of Lancaster Co VA from notes from old papers at the Court House and recollections of his aunt Miss Frances Carter, born 1738, died 1830; and on marriage and birth records handwritten in 17th century handwriting in a Prayer Book which had belonged to the Carter family, printed in 1662. It is believed the Prayer Book belonged to Capt Thomas himself. The deaths of Capt Thomas & his wife are recorded so he himself did not keep this record, if the handwriting is all the same. The details of the births include the day of the week, the time of day, and Godparents, so someone had kept very good records.

From the book, Thomas Carter's 1st wife was unknown, although he was said to have 12 children by her. He did marry a second time, 15 Jan 1750, to Mrs. Anne (Wale) Hunton, widow of Thomas Hunton. [so if Thomas married Sarah Haynie, it was unknown to J. L. Miller]. There are twelve children listed for George Carter in the book and there is no proof for his wife as Frances Neale, except that the 1858 manuscript says "I think his wife was a Miss Neale, of Westmoreland" and that the Neale family favored the given name Presley.

The will of Thomas Carter, written 1 Dec 1776, probated on Dec 19th, gave to son George the Negro woman Siller, and a book "Becket of the New Testament".

George was dead by 1787 when his wife gave permission for daughter Mary to marry Frederick Miller.

On 7 Feb 1805, Thompson Carter, Presley Carter, Levin Carter, and Frederick Miller conveyed a hundred acres to Spencer Carter, bounded on one side by the land of Charles E. Carter. Although no estate division has been found, it would seem there had been one.
